HIKING UNDER THE MOONLIGHT

If you like the hills, you can admire beautiful landscapes and natural surroundings while enjoying a wonderful hike in the countryside. You can also enjoy trails under the moonlight, and in summer you can get the most out of these footpaths in a different way. Fine nights at full moon are a great time for hiking.

Night route to the Sorteny Mountain Hut

One of easiest trails to follow in darkness is the footpath that leads to the Sorteny Valley Mountain Hut. The route starts at the car park at the end of the road. To get there, follow the Ordino road to El Serrat and turn off to the Sorteny Nature Park. During the summer there is an information booth in the car park. This is where the route begins.

There are two paths to the hut: the easiest one follows the track almost to the end. The other path follows the river bank.

If you do the walk on a night with a full moon, the moonlight will light your way, but you’ll need a head torch for the darkest parts. Take the chance to listen to the sounds of the night: the nocturnal animals and the water running down the river or the streams.

And don’t forget to stop and look at the sky. In Andorra you will be amazed to see all the stars and, if you come at the time of the Perseids meteor shower in August, you can enjoy this wonderful natural phenomenon in the mountains, surrounded by the peace and quiet of nature.

The walk to the hut takes about an hour. We recommend taking advantage of this night walk to spend a night at the Sorteny Refuge. You have the option of just booking a bed or of half board and sampling the mountain fare. Remember to book before going to ensure your place.

The feeling of having made your way to the hut under the moonlight and waking up the following day in such a special place is unforgettable.

Other night hikes

Other night hikes include the Gall Trail, the Iron Route or Engolasters Lake. See our route guide that contains over 60 hiking trails in Andorra, for all ages and all levels of fitness.

Its always a good idea to hire a mountain guide for this type of activity. Your guide will accompany you on your hikes and tell you all about the local fauna, flora and curiosities.
